Products & Technology Virotherapy A promising and recent addition to the large arsenal of existing therapies for treating cancer is virotherapy. The approach uses viruses to infect and destroy rapidly multiplying cancer cells within the body without affecting healthy cells. Viralytics’s Virotherapy Viralytics’s virotherapy technology uses Coxsackieviruses and Echoviruses, naturally occurring enteroviruses, associated with the common cold. The therapeutic use of these viruses was identified by Associate Professor Darren Shafren, who is managing the research at The University of Newcastle. Pre-clinical studies over three years have indicated anti-cancer effects in a range of cancers. Results have been published in peer-reviewed journals (see the individual virus pages) and the first clinical trial is underway in metastatic melanoma. Details of Viralytics’s current clinical trials can be found on the ClinicalTrials.gov website and on the Australian Clinical Trials Registry Website.
